Cosmology

The place where you were (in your dreams) is as much a world of fact and reality as is the material world and its happenings have sometimes a great effect on this world. What an ignorant lot of disciples you all are! Too much modernisation and Europeanisation by half!

-Sri Aurobindo.  Letters on Yoga, p1031

This is a synopsis of the Cosmology of the Universe based on various statements made by Sri Aurobindo & The Mother.

Note: This description should be used only for intuitive understanding and not as a fixed belief of what exists out there.  When you develop occult insight, you will know for certain.

A Universe with many worlds (a Multiverse)

We see the world before our eyes, a world with its stars and galaxies and assume that this is the only world which exists. In reality, there also exist many occult worlds of varying gradations of consciousness which are invisible to our physical senses as well as our scientific instruments. A “world” in occult terminology is akin to an energy formation or a formation of consciousness, somewhat like a virtual world populated by beings of its own kind, where the laws of physics are more flexible and where the orders of Time and Space are unlike ours.

Our dreams are transcriptions of travels and interactions in these occult worlds. After death, we cast off our physical body and withdraw into these occult worlds where we reside until the next incarnation. A Yogi who gains occult insight is able to see this vast structure of the Universe. It is precisely this vision which has been described in Chapter 11 of the Bhagavad Gita.

The Planes of the Universe

Higher worlds Sachchidananda The triple worlds which embody the principles of Existence(Sat), Consciousness(Chit), Ananda(Bliss)
Supramental world The power which creates and upholds manifestation.
Dividing Line Golden Lid This is the dividing line, the golden lid, between the Higher worlds and the Lower worlds.
Lower worlds Overmental World The world of the Cosmic Powers (Gods), all aspects of the Divine.
Mental Worlds The Universal Mind which is the channel for telepathy, the storehouse of our thoughts, the record of world history.
Vital Worlds The region which influences our creative endeavours as well as our lusts and desires.
Physical worlds Example is the Earth, a place for evolution.
Subconscient Repository of all dead thoughts and formations.
Inconscient Region of inconscience

Note: These worlds shown below are not layered as shown but actually in a different dimension.

The Mother on the nature of the Universe

Question: What are the “invisible worlds”?

Mother: You have heard and read that we are made up of various states of being: physical, vital, mental, psychic, spiritual, etc. Well, all these inner states of being correspond to invisible worlds. There is a physical world, a vital world, a mental world, a psychic world, and many spiritual worlds, a whole range of more and more subtle worlds approaching nearer and nearer to the Supreme. So, since you carry within yourself a corresponding range, by studying and becoming aware of your inner being you gradually make yourself capable of becoming aware also of these invisible worlds. For example, the mind: if the mind is conscious, coordinated, well controlled, it can move about it in the mental world just as the body does in the physical world and see what this mental world is like, what is going on there, what are its characteristics and so on. These things are not invisible in themselves − they are invisible to the physical consciousness and the physical senses, but not to the corresponding inner states of consciousness or the corresponding inner senses. For, by a systematic development one can acquire senses in these worlds and one can then live a similar life with different characteristics. I mean that one can live an objective life in these worlds if one is sufficiently developed oneself. Otherwise, they wouldn’t exist for us. If we did not carry in ourselves something corresponding to all that exists in the universe, this universe wouldn’t exist for us. And it is only a matter of systematic and methodical development. Some people have it spontaneously for various reasons, usually as a result of a long preparation in previous lives, sometimes because of specially favourable circumstances − they are born in a certain environment, of parents who had developed these faculties, and they were helped to develop them from childhood. Other people have to acquire them systematically by inner discipline; it takes time, a long time, but after all it doesn’t take much longer than for the brain of a child to grasp abstract mathematics. That takes years.

Question: Do these invisible worlds exist in a fixed place in the universe?

Mother: They form part of the universe, of course. Yes, one can say that they exist in a fixed place. But to understand that, to understand these things requires a mind capable of understanding that there are other dimensions than the purely material dimensions. For when you are told that your psychic being is in your body, that doesn’t mean that if you open up your body you will find your psychic being inside. You will find your heart, your stomach and the rest, but not your psychic being. And yet it is correct to say that it is within you. It extends beyond you too, but it is in another dimension. And one can say that there are as many dimensions as there are different worlds. Certainly all these invisible worlds − so-called invisible worlds − are contained, so to say, in the material universe. But they don’t occupy the place of other things. To make an imperfect comparison − it is valid only as a comparison − you can hold countless ideas in your brain and you certainly don’t have the feeling that you have to drive one out so that another one can come in, do you? They don’t occupy any space in that sense.

(Collected Works of the Mother, Vol 15, 30 january 1951)

Mother: The occult world is not one single region…but a gradation of regions, one could perhaps say, of more and more etherial or subtle regions, anyway, those farther and farther removed in their nature from the physical materiality we ordinarily see. And each one of these domains is a world in itself, having its forms and inhabited by beings with a density, one might say, analogous to that of the domain in which they live. Just as in the physical world we are of the same materiality as the physical world, so in the vital world, in the mental world, in the overmind world and in the supramental world – and in many others, infinite others – there are beings which have a form whose substance is similar to the one of that world. This means that if you are able to enter consciously into that world with the part of your being which corresponds to that domain, you can move there quite objectively, as in the material world.

Time and Space in the Universe

See Spacetime

Existence-Consciousness-Bliss (Sachchidananda)

These three worlds are one in essence and are hence called triune. They embody the principles of Sat(Existence), Chit (Consciousness) and Ananda (Bliss). They are also referred to as the Satyaloka, Tapoloka and Janaloka.

Supramental world

Other names for the Supermind:

  • Maharloka in the Vedas.
  • Vijnana world in the Upanishads.
  • rendered as Truth-Consciousness in English by Sri Aurobindo.

The Supermind is the Creator of the phenomenal universe, of the lower worlds of Mind, Life and Matter. It is the medium for self-manifestation of the Supreme or Absolute. It applies some fixed truths, some limiting principles to shape the lower worlds out of an Infinite Consciousness. It creates multiplicity out of unity, differentiation and separation out of pure being.

Three poises of the Supermind

The Supermind has three poises which together result in the creation of Maya (Illusion) in the lower worlds:

Comprehending consciousness(Vijnana) : It holds creation in Unity. This can also be described as the causal state (Karana Avastha)

Apprehending consciousness(Prajnana) : The process of differentiation begins in this poise; it brings about the One in Many and the Many in One. There is separation between Purusha and Prakriti, subject and object, self and not-self but all are still parts of the one. This may also be called the state of expression (Karya Avastha )

Projecting consciousness (Avidya) : Further modification of the second poise so as to support evolution of a diversified individuality. Multiplicity in creation is now fully expressed. This may be called the state of full manifestation (Purna Vyakta Avastha)

Overmental world

The Overmind is the domain of the Gods, and the origin of all revelations and the highest artistic creations. It is the line between the Higher Worlds (Para Prakriti) and the Lower Worlds (Lower Prakriti). In the words of the Upanishad, “The face of Truth is covered by a golden lid.”

Mother: Gods can be said to be Cosmic Powers, the beings of divine origin who have been charged with supervising, directing and organising the evolution of the universe; and more specifically, since the formation of the earth they have served as messengers and intermediaries to bring to the earth the aid of the higher regions and to preside over the formation of the mind and its progressive ascension. It is usually to the gods of the overmind that the prayers of the various religions are addressed. These religions most often choose, for various reasons, one of these gods and transform him for their personal use into the supreme God.

(Collected Works of the Mother, Volume 16,  27 November 1959)

Psychic world

The psychic world is the home of the souls, where they go to rest between incarnations.

Mother: The psychic world or plane of consciousness is that part of the world, the psychic being is that part of the being which is directly under the influence of the Divine Consciousness; the hostile forces cannot have even the remotest action upon it. It is a world of harmony, and everything moves in it from light to light and from progress to progress. It is the seat of the Divine Consciousness, the Divine Self in the individual being. It is a centre of light and truth and knowledge and beauty and harmony which the Divine Self in each of you creates by his presence, little by little; it is influenced, formed and moved by the Divine Consciousness of which it is a part and parcel. It is in each of you the deep inner being which you have to find in order that you may come in contact with the Divine in you. It is the intermediary between the Divine Consciousness and your external consciousness; it is the builder of the inner life, it is that which manifests in the outer nature the order and rule of the Divine Will. If you become aware in your outer consciousness of the psychic being within you and unite with it, you can find the pure Eternal Consciousness and live in it; instead of being moved by the Ignorance as the human being constantly is, you grow aware of the presence of an eternal light and knowledge within you, and to it you surrender and are integrally consecrated to it and moved by it in all things.

(Collected Works of the Mother, Vol 3, 26 May 1929)

Mental world

Nolini Kanta Gupta: The mental world, the world of thoughts, is a world in itself. It is autonomous. It moves in its own way with its own laws. We human beings, we believe that it is we who think, that is, produce or create our thoughts. We are the makers of our notions and ideas. But in reality it is not so. Thoughts, ideas, notions, all movements of the mind are self-existent realities. They go about or flow on like the waves of a vast sea. Human beings are mere instruments, receptacles that capture or seize some undulations of this vast ocean. Man is man, that is to say, a mental being, because in him the brain has developed to such an extent and in such a manner that it serves as antennae or as an aerial to receive vibrations from the mental world. Indeed the ordinary human mind is a sort of crossroads where all kinds of thoughts from all places meet, cross one another and make an ideal market place. In fact, an individual does not possess any thought-movement which can be called his own. He only catches a contagion. And like a contagion thought-movements pass from one person to another although one may think or feel that the movement is one’s own.

(Nolini Kanta Gupta. Collected Works, Vol 4, Mind and the Mental Way)

Interpenetrating planes of the Mind

Mother: Mind is one movement, but there are many varieties of the movement, many strata, that touch and even press into each other. At the same time the movement we call mind penetrates into other planes. In the mental world itself there are many levels. All these mind-planes and mind-forces are interdependent; but yet there is a difference in the quality of their movements and for facility of expression we have to separate them from one another. Thus we can speak of a higher mind, an intermediary mind, a physical and even a quite material mind; and there are many other distinctions that can be made.

Now, there are mental planes that stand high above the vital world and escape its influence; there are no hostile forces or beings there. But there are others – and they are many – that can be touched or penetrated by the vital forces. The mind-plane that belongs to the physical world, the physical mind, as we usually call it, is more material in its structure and movement than the true mind and it is very much under the sway of the vital world and the hostile forces. This physical mind is usually in a kind of alliance with the lower vital consciousness and its movements; when the lower vital manifests certain desires and impulses, this more material mind comes to its aid and justifies and supports them with specious explanations and reasonings and excuses. It is this layer of mind that is most open to suggestions from the vital world and most often invaded by its forces.

(Collected Works of the Mother, Vol 3, 26 May 1929)

Beings of the Mental worlds

Question: Are there beings in the mental worlds?

Mother: Yes, many. They are completely independent; they have their own life, their own relations among themselves, as in other worlds. Only for a physical consciousness, time and space are not the same in the vital or the mental worlds as in the physical world. For example, those who are in the physical consciousness have the impression that shiftings in the mind are instantaneous – compared with the higher consciousness they are not instantaneous, but compared with the physical consciousness, they are instantaneous, of an extreme rapidity.

The beings of the mental world also have an individuality of their own, even a form that can be permanent if they choose to keep one. Their form is the expression of their thought and is sufficiently plastic to be able to change with their thought, yet has a sufficient continuity to enable one to recognise them. If you go out of your body and enter the mental world, you can meet these beings, speak to them, even make an appointment with them for the next time !

Question: Can they exercise their influence on a human being, as the beings of the vital worlds do ?

Mother: Many mental formations try to realise themselves upon earth, but these are generally created by human beings; they then continue to work in the mental world with the intention of influencing the mind of human beings. But the beings of the mental plane proper are generally creators, and because they are creators of form, they are not much concerned with influencing other forms – they are satisfied with expressing themselves through the forms they have made.

(Collected Works of the Mother, Vol 4, 19th Mar 1951)

The record of world history is kept in the mental world

Mother: In the mental world, for instance, there is a domain of the physical mind which is related to physical things and keeps the memory of physical happenings upon earth. It is as though you were entering into innumerable vaults, one following another indefinitely, and these vaults are filled with small pigeon-holes, one above another, one above another, with tiny doors. Then if you want to know something and if you are conscious, you look, and you see something like a small point – a shining point; you find that this is what you wish to know and you have only to concentrate there and it opens; and when it opens, there is a sort of an unrolling of something like extremely subtle manuscripts, but if your concentration is sufficiently strong you begin to read as though from a book. And you have the whole story in all its details. There are thousands of these little holes, you know; when you go for a walk there, it is as though you were walking in infinity. And in this way you can find the exact facts about whatever you want to know. But I must tell you that what you find is never what has been reported in history – histories are always planned out; I have never come across a single “historical” fact which is like history. This is not to discourage you from learning history, but things are like that. Events have been quite different from the way in which they have been reported, and for a very simple reason: the human brain is not capable of recording things with exactitude; history is built upon memories and memories are always vague.

(Collected Works of the Mother, Vol 4, 15 Feb 1951)

Nolini Kanta Gupta: All that has happened upon earth, everything from the beginning of creation till now, everything without exception has been recorded somewhere in some particular world or region of consciousness. All that man has thought, his researches and discoveries, his findings and conclusions are kept intact, carefully stored. If you want to know anything of the past history of the earth, the happening at a particular time and place, you have simply to transplant yourself into that world and look into the records.

It is a very curious place, something like a vast library. It consists of an infinite number of cells, as it were, each containing all information on a particular subject. They seem to be squares in shape and they remain closed normally. If you have to consult a particular square, you press a button and it opens and out of it comes a roll of written matter. You unroll it and find out what you want. There are millions and millions and millions of these cells and rolls, around, above, every-where. Fortunately in the mental world you can move any-where as you like, you do not require lifts and ladders to go up.

The point, however, is how to go there at all. Well, the first thing is that you must completely silence your mind. Mental cogitations, agitations you must leave behind, no thoughts must enter your consciousness, it must be tranquil and still, like a tram parent sheet of water or smooth and polished like a mirror. The description I have given of a library is only an image, the real thing is something different. However, you have in this way some idea to go upon. In the silent mind you form a point of consciousness and send it out as an emissary to gather the required information. This point of conscious-ness must be absolutely detached and free to go as it likes; for if it were in any way kept tied to the normal movements of your own mind, then you will not go further than what is in your head. You must be able to make your brain a blank, you must have no preconceived notion, no idea that the solution of your problem might lie in this way or that. As I say, your mind has to be a thoroughly blank page, a clean slate, with nothing written on it, no mark even. There should’ be instead a sincere aspiration to know the truth, without postulating beforehand what kind of truth it might be; other-wise you will meet your own formation in the brain.

(Nolini Kanta Gupta, Collected Works, Vol 3, Record of World History)

Record of history described in Sri Aurobindo’s epic poem Savitri:

There in a hidden chamber closed and mute
Are kept the record graphs of the cosmic scribe,
And there the tables of the sacred Law,
There is the Book of Being’s index page;
The text and glossary of the Vedic truth
Are there; the rhythms and metres of the stars
Significant of the movements of our fate:
The symbol powers of number and of form,
And the secret code of the history of the world
And Nature’s correspondence with the soul
Are written in the mystic heart of Life.

(Savitri by Sri Aurobindo. Book 1, Canto 5, Yoga of the King, p 74)

Vital world

The forces and beings of the vital world have a great influence on human beings. There are two parts of the vital world – Higher and Lower.

  • The Higher Vital is a world of beauty − the poet, artist, musician are in close contact with it and gain their inspirations from it.
  • The Lower Vital is a world of powers and passions, lusts and desires, − our own lusts and desires, and passions and ambitions can put us into connection with the vital worlds and their forces and beings. It is a world of things dark, dangerous and horrible. Nightmares are contacts with this side of the vital plane. Its influences are also the source of much in men that is demoniac, dirty, cruel and base.

(Sri Aurobindo, SABCL vol 24, Letters on Yoga, Page 1500)

Higher vital

Mother: It is a world peopled by beings of the vital proper, beings of great power and even great beauty. Most people who dabble in occultism without having a deep enough spiritual life are immediately deluded by them – some even take them as the supreme God and worship them. That’s generally how religions are created. They are a great success. They are the supreme God of many a religion – they are beings of the vital world, and can assume an appearance of overwhelming beauty. They are the biggest impostors in the world, and dangerous at that; it takes the spiritual instinct, the instinct of true spiritual purity, not to be deceived by them.

(Mother’s Agenda, March 11, 1962)

Lower vital

Mother: It is a world of all the desires and impulses and passions and of movements of violence and greed and cunning and every kind of ignorance; but all the dynamisms too are there, all the life-energies and all the powers.

The beings of this world have by their nature a strange grip over the material world and can exercise upon it a sinister influence. Some of them are formed out of the remains of the human being that persist after death in the vital atmosphere near to the earth-plane. His desires and hungers still float there and remain in form even after the dissolution of the body; often they are moved to go on manifesting and satisfying themselves and the birth of these creatures of the vital world is the consequence. But these are minor beings and, if they can be very troublesome, it is yet not impossible to deal with them. There are others, far more dangerous, who have never been in human form; never were they born into a human body upon earth, for most often they refuse to accept this way of birth because it is slavery to matter and they prefer to remain in their own world, powerful and mischievous, and to control earthly beings from there. For, if they do not want to be born on earth, they do want to be in contact with the physical nature, but without being bound by it. Their method is to try first to cast their influence upon a man; then they enter slowly into his atmosphere and in the end may get complete possession of him, driving out entirely the real human soul and personality. These creatures, when in possession of an earthly body, may have the human appearance but theyhave not a human nature. Their habit is to draw upon the life-force of human beings; they attack and capture vital power wherever they can and feed upon it. If they come into your atmosphere, you suddenly feel depressed and exhausted; if you are near them for some time you fall sick; if you live with one of them, it may kill you.

(Collected Works of the Mother, Vol 3, 12th May 1929)

Worlds created by mental formations (i.e. imagination)

Human imagination is very powerful and can create a world of its own (i.e. a mental formation) in the vast Universe.

Mother: In these invisible worlds there are also regions which are the result of human mental formations (i.e. imagination). One can find there all one wants. In fact, one very often finds there exactly what one expects to find. There are hells, there are paradises, there are purgatories. There are all sorts of things in accordance with the different religions and their conceptions. These things have only a very relative existence, but with a relativity similar to that of material things here; that is to say, for someone who finds himself there, they are entirely real and their effects quite tangible. human beings here are mostly convinced that the only reality is the physical reality – the reality of what one can touch, can see – and for them, all that cannot be seen, cannot be touched, cannot be felt, is after all, problematical; well, what happens there is an identical phenomenon. People who at the moment of death are convinced, for one reason or another, that they are going to paradise or maybe to hell, do find themselves there after their death; and for them it is truly a paradise or a hell. And it is extremely difficult to make them come out of it and go to a place which is more true, more real.

(Collected Works of the Mother,  vol 8, 11 July 1956)

Does Paradise (Heaven) and eternal Hell exist?

Mother responds to a question regarding the existence of a Heaven where good people go and Hell where sinners land:

Mother: It is generally what religious priests say to the faithful to encourage them to do good. For it is a notorious fact that life is not more easy for the good than for the wicked; usually it is the contrary: the wicked succeed better than the good! So people who are not very spiritual say to themselves: “Why should I take the trouble of being good? It is better to be wicked and have an easy life.” It is very difficult to make them understand that there are many kinds of good and that sometimes it is worth the trouble perhaps to make an effort to be good. So to make this intelligible to the least intelligent, they are told: “There, it is very simple. If you are quite obedient, quite nice, quite unselfish, if you always do good deeds, and if you believe in the dogmas we teach, well, when you die, God will send you to Paradise. If you have sometimes good will, sometimes bad, if, sometimes you do good, sometimes you don’t and if you think very much of yourself and very little of others, then when you die, you will be sent to Purgatory for another experience. And then if you are thoroughly wicked, if you are always doing harm to others, doing all kinds of bad things and you do not care about the good of anyone and particularly if you do not believe in the dogma that we teach you, then you will go straight to Hell and for eternity.”

This is one of the prettiest inventions I have ever heard of: they have invented eternal hell. That is to say, once you are in hell, it is for eternity You understand what that means, for eternity? You will be tortured and burnt (in the hot countries you are burnt, in the cold countries you are frozen), and that for eternity. That is it. So I do not know who taught you those pretty things; but they are simply inventions to make people obey, to keep them under control.

There are teachings which are not like that. There are religions which are not like that. But still one can, in a poetic, picturesque, descriptive manner speak of a paradise; because this paradise means a wonderful place where there is utmost joy and happiness and comfort… And yet that depends upon the religion to which you belong. For there are heavens where you pass your time singing praises to God, you do nothing else – but in the end that must be somewhat wearisome; however, there you pass your time playing music and singing the praises of God. There are other heavens, on the contrary, where you enjoy all possible pleasures, all that you desired to have during your life, you have in heaven. There are heavens where you are constantly in blissful meditation but – for people who are not keen on meditating, that must be rather tiresome. However, that depends, you know: they have invented all kinds of things so that people may really want to be wise and obey the laws given to them.

(Collected Works of the Mother, vol. 5, p 131)

Beings of the Vital worlds

Sri Aurobindo: These are the forces and beings that are interested in maintaining the falsehoods they have created in the world of the Ignorance and in putting them forward as the Truth which men must follow. In India they are termed Asuras, Rakshasas, Pishachas (beings respectively of the mentalised vital, middle vital and lower vital planes) who are in opposition to the Gods, the Powers of Light. These too are Powers, for they too have their cosmic field in which they exercise their function and authority and some of them were once divine Powers (the former gods, purve devah, as they are called somewhere in the Mahabharata) who have fallen towards the darkness by revolt against the divine Will behind the cosmos. The word “appearances” refers to the forms they take in order to rule the world, forms often false and always incarnating falsehood, sometimes pseudo-divine.

(Sri Aurobindo. The Mother, SABCL vol. 25, p 62)

Amal Kiran: In addition, there are three other kinds of beings dwell in the hideous harmony of the vital worlds. The Indian terms are Asura, Rakshasa, Pishacha. In English they may be translated Titan, Giant, Demon. Each has his special function.

  • The Asura is a being who comes with great powers of thought, not a beautiful and systematic turn but a formidable vehemence of it. He has also great “moral” powers, he can be self-controlled, ascetic and chaste in his own life, a sort of inverted Yogi, but all his gifts of tapasyā he uses for selfish and violent ends. His aim is to pluck civilisation from the roots, destroy all humane and progressive impulse, regiment the spontaneous diversity of life into a ruthless movement of robots, drink the exultation of triumph by breaking with an iron heel the dreaming heart of man.
  • The Rakshasa is a devourer without brains, the ravager who builds nothing save a pyramid of skulls. He ploughs up the world into a myriad graves and leaves it a chaos of corpses. He is pure greed run amok.
  • The Pishacha or Pramatha fouls and pollutes all things, he is the wallower in dirt and the necrophage, the inventor of obscene tortures, the mutilating maniac.

The Asura is the General, the Fuhrer of the army of darkness; the Rakshasa is the lieutenant, the henchman; the Pishacha is the private, the storm-trooper.

(K.D.Sethna, Vision and Work of Sri Aurobindo)

Subtle physical

Sri Aurobindo: The subtle physical is closest to the physical, and most like it. But yet the conditions are different and the thing too different. For instance, the subtle physical has a freedom, plasticity, intensity, power, colour, wide and manifold play (there are thousands of things there that are not here) of which, as yet, we have no possibility on earth.

(Sri Aurobindo, Letters on Yoga, Planes & Parts)

Sri Aurobindo:In the subtle physical plane there are, not one, but many layers of consciousness and each moves in its own being, that is to say, in its own space. I have said that each subtle plane is a conglomeration or series of worlds. Each space may at any point meet, penetrate or coincide with another; accordingly at one point of meeting or coincidence there might be several subtle objects occupying what we might rather arbitrarily call the same space, and yet they may not be in any actual relation with each other. If there is a relation created, it is the multiple consciousness of the seer in which the meeting-place becomes apparent that creates it. On the other hand, there may be a relation between objects in different regions of space correlated to each other as in the case of the gross physical object and its subtle counterpart. There you can more easily reason of relations between one space and another.

(Sri Aurobindo, Letters on Yoga, Reason Science and Yoga)

Beings on the physical planes

Sri Aurobindo: On the physical plane the corresponding forces are obscure beings, more forces than beings, what the Theosophists call the elementals. They are not strongly individualised beings like the Rakshasas and Asuras, but ignorant and obscure forces working in the subtle physical plane. What we in Sanskrit call the Bhutasmostly come under this class. But there are two kinds of elementals, the one mischievous and the other not.

(Sri Aurobindo, Letters on Yoga, The Divine and the Hostile Powers)

Physical world

This is the world we see before our eyes, the world studied by science and explored by astronomy, the world where Einstein discovered his laws of relativity.

Subconscient

The subconscient lies between the Inconscient and the Lower Triple worlds (Mind, Vital, Physical). It contains the potentiality of all the primitive reactions to life which struggle out to the surface from the dull and inert strands of Matter and form by a constant development a slowly evolving and self-formulating consciousness; it contains them not as ideas, perceptions or conscious reactions but as the fluid substance of these things. But also all that is consciously experienced sinks down into the subconscient, not as precise though submerged memories but as obscure yet obstinate impressions of experience, and these can come up at any time as dreams, as mechanical repetitions of past thought, feelings, action, etc., as “complexes” exploding into action and event, etc., etc. The subconscient is the main cause why all things repeat themselves and nothing ever gets changed except in appearance. It is the cause why people say character cannot be changed, the cause also of the constant return of things one hoped to have got rid of for ever. All seeds are there and all Sanskaras of the mind, vital and body,—it is the main support of death and disease and the last fortress (seemingly impregnable) of the Ignorance. All too that is suppressed without being wholly got rid of sinks down there and remains as seed ready to surge up or sprout up at any moment.

(Sri Aurobindo, Letters on Yoga, Planes and Parts of the Being)

Inconscient

The Inconscient is roughly equivalent to the Patala (underworld) defined in the Hindu scriptures.

Rishabchand: The Inconscient is the origin of the evolutionary creation. It is an apparent negation of the superconscient, an infinite abyss of absolute darkness in which the transcendent omnipresent Reality gets involved for playing at self-loss and self-finding, for the delight of a plunge and a subsequent emergence, a progressive evolution into multiple forms and a manifold self-expression. The engulfing darkness of the Inconscient turns the eternal effulgent substance of Reality into Matter, the dense and obscure primal substrate. In this fathomless night of existence or apparent non-existence, there is no stirring of life or mind, only a blind mighty Energy weaving stupendous systems of worlds and suns and moons and star-clusters and planets, as if in a dumb, creative sleep.

(Rishabchand, In the Mother’s Light, Subconscient and Inconscient)

Beings of the occult worlds

Distinction between evolutionary and typal beings

Amal Kiran: The characteristic mark of all these denizens of the vital plane is that the force they express is “typal” and not, like the earth’s “evolutionary”. The sign of a typal force is a drive towards mechanical uniformity, rigid regimentation, strict conformity to one type alone — a drive contrary to the many-sided, flexible and free movement of the evolving human soul striving, by means of trial, error, self-correction and through a thousand truths and innumerable impulses, to live and let live more and more abundantly, more and more profoundly.

[K.D. Sethna, Our Light and Delight]

Gods

Sri Aurobindo: There are Gods everywhere on all the planes. The Gods are Personalities and Powers of the dynamic Divine. You speak as if the evolution were the sole creation; the creation or manifestation is very vast and contains many planes and worlds that existed before the evolution, all different in character and with different kinds of beings. The fact of being prior to the evolution does not make them undifferentiated. The world of the Asuras is prior to the evolution, so are the worlds of the mental, vital or subtle physical Devas – but these beings are all different from each other. The great Gods belong to the overmind plane; in the supermind they are unified as aspects of the Divine, in the overmind they appear as separate personalities. Any godhead can descend by emanation to the physical plane and associate himself with the evolution of a human being with whose line of manifestation he is in affinity.

The Devas and Asuras are not evolved in Matter; for the typal being only a Purusha with its Prakriti is necessary – this Purusha may put out a mental and vital Purusha to represent it and according as it is centred in one or another it belongs to the mental or vital world. That is all.

While the Gods cannot be transformed, for they are typal and not evolutionary beings, they can come for conversion – that is to say, to give up their own ideas and outlook on things and conform themselves to the higher Will and supramental Truth of the Divine.

As to the gods, man can build forms which they will accept but these forms too are inspired into man’s mind from the planes to which the god belongs. All creation has the two sides, the formed and the formless, – the gods too are formless and yet have forms, but a godhead can take many forms, here Maheshwari, there Pallas Athene. Maheshwari herself has many forms in her lesser manifestation, Durga, Uma, Parvati, Chandi, etc. The gods are not limited to human forms – man also has not always seen them in human forms only.

(Sri Aurobindo, Letters on Yoga, p 385)

Summary of beings of various planes

Lower Vital Demon/Pishachcha
Vital Gandharvas (Gods)
Subtle Physical Elementals/Bhutas/Gnomes

Well, the occult world is not one single region where everything is mixed, which only becomes occult because we can’t see it. The occult world is a gradation of regions, one could perhaps say, of more and more etherial or subtle regions, anyway, those farther and farther removed in their nature from the physical materiality we ordinarily see.

A poem by Henry Vaughan (1621 − 1695), Welsh physician and mystic poet.

I saw Eternity the other night,
Like a great ring of pure and endless light,
    All calm, as it was bright;
And round beneath it, Time in hours, days, years,
    Driv’n by the spheres
Like a vast shadow mov’d; in which the world
And all her train were hurl’d.

    Dear Sandeep
Thanks for providing a detailed explanation of the worlds, beings and their characteristics.
The physical system itself is enormous and can’t be grasped by mind, the other worlds are vast and infinite and difficult to be imagined by ordinary mind

While reading the cosmology above I was specifically looking for the concepts of heaven and hell as described by the religions and surprisingly it doesn’t exist as per the above descriptions. It gives a comfort when Mother pointer out that these were relative and exist on imagination of the man.

The puranas describe the places as if describing about England or India as something actually existing. These descriptions are full of horror, they explain different types of Hells for various different types of sins committed and they also name the tortures which the being has to undergo after death.I don’t know from where the authors of the puranas got these concepts, probably from Buddhism I guess. Whatever may be the moral reasons the author of the puranas had felt in creating the horror stories, its simply disgusting, cruel and degrading the divine.

Swamy vivekananda says that Heaven and Hell are simply states of Mind.Theospohists give a different description. Though the mind does not accept the existence of the Torture worlds of hell, one gets confused when saints acknowledge the after life suffering as a sort of punishment.

I would like to know if SA and Mother explained these things in detail somewhere.

I am going to update the page with more information on Heaven and Hell.

There are do exist worlds “below” the physical which have been referred to as Subconscient and Inconscient above. In some Hindu scriptures, they are called Naraka or Patala, but we don’t go there when we die.

What happens is that we vacate the physical body, and then enter the vital worlds, then the mental worlds and finally the psychic world. In each of these worlds, the corresponding sheath of our body is gradually separated from our psychic being. When everything has been dissolved and detached from the psychic being, then we go to rest in the psychic world until the next incarnation.

Not everyone goes through the same process. The more evolved you are, the higher you rise and the longer the time between rebirths. Some people are so attached to petty earthly desires that they are reborn quickly.

The suffering in after-life occurs during our passage through the vital worlds. The vital sheath contains deposits of our earthly desires, and these desires attract the attention of vital spirits who wish to satiate themselves. It is because of this interaction that we suffer for a time until the vital sheath finally detaches itself from the psychic being. If you have reached Enlightenment in this life or if you are protected by a greater Being, then you can pass through the vital worlds unmolested and without any suffering.

The notion of eternal Heaven where you frolic with maidens or eternal Hell where you are roasted by some Satan has no relevance in Hinduism.

      2) The section on Rebirth in the “Letters on Yoga”.
and may be a few other places.

The wikipedia link on naraka provide by sandeep is the one made me reflect on these ideas.I haven’t read the puranas but the graphic description on this wiki page alone is enough to create the horror in one’s mind.
If take in to account the claims of people who have entered in to subterranean worlds in the modern tome then the patala as a physical reality described in the scriptures may have some elements of truth in it.But the concept of naraka and torture is entirely different and I think it does not fit in to subterranean model of earth.

I am eagerly waiting for sandeep’s update regarding this topic in this page.

No, torture and eternal Hell does not exist.

K said: If take in to account the claims of people who have entered in to subterranean worlds in the modern tome

Not sure what claims you are referring to here, but the lower seven worlds (Patala) do exist. In fact, Sri Aurobindo and the Mother deliberately descended into those worlds to purge the Earth of the tenebrous subconscious formations which hold mankind captive and prevent the human mind from rising above it subconscious habits.

According to the Rig Veda, the lower worlds conceal the eighth sun (Aditya) of consciousness called Martanda who has to be liberated.

Some verses from Sri Aurobindo’s poem Savitri on the topic:

Into the abysmal secrecy he came
Where darkness peers from her mattress, grey and nude,
And stood on the last locked subconscient’s floor,
Where Being slept unconscious of its thoughts
And built the world not knowing what it built.
There waiting its hour the future lay unknown,
There is the record of the vanished stars.
There in the slumber of the cosmic Will
He saw the secret key of Nature’s change.
A light was with him, an invisible hand
Was laid upon the error and the pain
Till it became a quivering ecstasy,
The shock of sweetness of an arm’s embrace.
He saw in Night the Eternal’s shadowy veil,
Knew death for a cellar of the house of life,
In destruction felt creation’s hasty pace.

“As soon as I came upon Theon’s teaching (even before meeting him personally), and read and understood all kinds of things which I hadn’t known before, I began to work quite systematically. Every night, at the same hour, I was working to construct – between the purely terrestrial atmosphere and the psychic atmosphere – a path of protection across the vital, so that people wouldn’t have to pass through it (for those who are conscious but without knowledge it’s a very difficult passage – infernal.) I was preparing this path, doing this work (it must have been around 1903 or 1904, I don’t remember exactly) for months and months and months. All sorts of extraordinary things happened during that time – extraordinary. I could tell long stories…. “

I understand from you now that the 7 layers of patal exist and this affects humans subconsciously, besides now some of the verses of saints which mentions these worlds gives a different interpretation to me.Yes it is the subsconscient they are referring.Tanks for clarifying

I want to add one rule of thumb. There are two types of scriptures in Hinduism : Smriti (tradition) and Sruti (revelation). The Puranas and Brahmanas are Smriti (tradition) and need not be swallowed in their entirety because they also contain description of ancient kings and what not. The spiritual seeker must focus on the Rig Veda and Upanishads which are Sruti (revelation).

The subterranean worlds (of Admiral Byrd and others) are not the same as the Patala(Subconscient and Inconscient). You cannot descend physically into Patala. You have to enter there via a transfer of consciousness just as you enter vital worlds in a dream.

As for Shambala, see the last section of a previous post

        Brother Sandeep,
I wish to correct a little bit about the classification of scriptures.I hope you don’t mind.
1)Shruti(primary) meaning that which is heard, encompasses Vedas,Brahmanas,Aranyakas and Upanishads.Vedas are considered apaurusheya and the remaining 3 are commentaries on Vedas which were writtten by exalted ones.
2)Smriti(secondary) meaning that which is remembered, encompasses Itihasa, puranas, dharshana shastras etc.

      2. Sandeep Post author

No, I don’t have a problem with being corrected 🙂

I included the Brahmanas under Smriti(secondary) because I read through a few of them and found that they contain arcane rituals. See the summary of Aitareya Brahmana.

I excluded texts such as Aranyakas and other Vedas from my comment because I have yet to read them.
Some day I hope to understand the real significance of all these scriptures!

Off the cuff, there are not supposed to be any beings in the Supramental world itself, because it is the creator of the lower worlds. The Supramental is above manifestation.

also be having a counterpart or equivalent in supramental…to which we can pray or aspire to manifest

      2. Sandeep Post author

        Some quotes from Sri Aurobindo:

…this causal body is, as we say, little developed in the majority of men and to live in it or to ascend to the supramental planes, as distinguished from corresponding sub-planes in the mental being, or still more to dwell consciously upon them is the most difficult thing of all for the human being. It can be done in the trance of Samadhi, but otherwise only by a new evolution of the capacities of the individual Purusha of which few are even willing to conceive.

(Sri Aurobindo. Synthesis of Yoga , The Planes of our Existence)

None in ordinary times go beyond the ānanda in the waking state, for the cit and sat are only attainable in suṣupti, because only the first five sheaths or pañcakoṣas are yet sufficiently developed to be visible except to the men of the Satya Yuga and even by them the two others are not perfectly seen.

I find it hard to understand no matter how many times I read. Could someone explain in simple terms? Do gods already exist (no evolution in their case) in the overmind? How do we interact with them, then? If the supermind is above overmind, does it mean supermind is just one uniform consciousness without any separate beings like men, gods etc.? Is it the brahman of advaita?

Don’t worry if you don’t understand whats written on this page. Whether the Gods exist or not is of no relevance to the novice. As you develop deeper understanding of your inner movements, you will begin to understand everything else. Spiritual development is like an growing and ascending spiral, which starts from a bright point and gradually envelopes and illumines the surrounding areas.

In the beginning, one must focus on psychology (how should I live?) rather than ontology (what exists out there?). You have to read literature which motivates you to live better, which awakens introspection as well as the Atman within. If you have an affinity for Sri Aurobindo, start reading his works such as Savitri, Essays on the Gita, Life Divine, Synthesis of Yoga or the Letters on Yoga. It may take a few readings to grasp his texts but keep trying because its worth it.

“I imagined (quite vividly) ufos being a higher form of (human) consciousness”

l’m not quite sure what you mean, but l assume your referring a higher astral or mental entity (human) manifesting a UFO at the physical level, something like the projection of a hologram. lf this what you mean, l’m inclined to believe it.
l think a lot of sightings would support this theory. Look at how fast some of them vanish from the sky.
ln a book l was reading recently by a man who has been astral travelling for about 40 years, he describes seeing alien spacecraft in some astral world and also that ppl there could shape-shift into anything they like. Some were changing into aliens. Anything’s possible from those worlds, apparently.
Here a description by him (sorry if l’ve gone way off track, but in line with what your saying, l believe quite a bit of UFO activity can be tied in to otherdimensional interference – especially from the abduction angle).

“One of the things which can lead you into thinking that your OBE may be no more than a dream are the incredible surreal transformations that can take place right in front of your own eyes.
When I first came across this phenomena I began to doubt the evidence of my own eyes, but looking at it more logically it began to make sense: The ability of inhabitants to transform their outer appearance.
    Multidimensional Man Page 163:
“Whereas on the physical world costume is all we can muster to express our individuality, imagination here had become physical reality, and despite the diversity everything was in complete harmony.
I was prompted to laugh out loud when observing parts of the display: some were uninhibitedly erotic, with a whole group of attractive women and men, half morphed into fantasy leopards, blatantly displaying their desires whilst indulging in a sexual dance routine. Others had transformed into Gods and Goddesses projecting sparks and bolts of lightning into the sky using just powerful gestures.
Inevitably every carnival has people on stilts, but these people had genuine long legs and arms, allowing for more exuberant expressions of their dance movements. There were dancing fantasy shapes, continuously changing, totally abstract and bearing little resemblance to the people who had transmuted into them. There were attractive alien creatures, white lights bursting from their insides though their metallic scales, illuminating the crowd around them.”
This was not the only time I had observed this when out of the body. I had witnessed the transformation of my mother from and old woman into a young trendy teenager. On the lower levels I had seen people transformed into hideous gargoyles simply as a result of their hideous inner natures. Eventually I began to accept that people were able to morph also as a result of their intent as well as a result of their inner character. We can to a degree even witness this in physical life, if not quite to such dramatic effect. When we see a happy person they appear younger and more youthful. The same person being depressed and unhappy visibly ages.
Out of body travellers might as well accept that the worlds they enter, follow completely new laws. Laws, which when looked at with the rationality of our sane physical senses, appear plainly absurd. But if we confront the next dimensions with an open, unconditioned and analytical mind we can draw from the text books of psychology a better understanding of such phenomena.”.

I’ve never seen one … yet. I remember a few years ago of a sighting over Manhattan in broad daylight, a whole cluster of them caught on film. It made the news. And then there was a group of people [Heaven’s Gate] in San Diego area (this is a little different from a mere sighting and what we are talking about, but on-topic of ufo’s) all committing suicide to meet with a vessel hidden behind a passing comet. Anyways, all very interesting … and thanks for the Jurgen Ziewe quotes!

Heavens gate was a group of psychos. For God’s sake, one should stop reading anything and everything written on cosmology. The other comment by “mike” from a book with the author claiming to be astral travelling for 40 years looks like some vital world vision where the vital beings take up the authors own fancies and tries to convey them as truth! We should be very careful whose writings we are taking for truth. It is better to stick to SA and M teachings…or else follow their guidance and realize oneself about aliens etc

l’ve never seen a UFO myself, and from what l’ve read about abductee’s and the manipulation that’s going on, l think l’m grateful.. Most of the new-age types think their all beings of light, but that’s not what my research has revealed. As you suggest, most are interdimensional (astral visitations), then we might need to keep a wary eye on them.

Yes, you’ve probably read what M has said about the chinese being of Lunar origin, and without a psychic being, (although She does say below they might have picked one up since they’ve been here.

“I have come to understand that the Chinese are a lunar race – their origin is the moon. They came to
earth when the moon got too cold and they could no longer exist there. This is something I saw at the
beginning of the century and my impression was further intensified when I went to China.201 They are a
lunar race. And they gave me the feeling of people who lack a psychic being: they are cold, ice-cold.
    But wonderfully intellectual!
I met another Chinese a few years ago, a man with a spiritual life. He came to meet me and talked
for an hour about China. It made me understand China externally as if I had been born and lived my
whole life there. I saw they were people who have attained the summit of the intellect, and who have a
creative power – inventors. He told me, “No people in the world could understand Sri Aurobindo
intellectually as well as the Chinese.” And it was luminously true. The highest intellectual
    comprehension, really at its peak.
It’s another story when it comes to doing yoga…. Although that must depend entirely on the
individual. The Chinese don’t have the same spiritual intensity you find rooted in the Indian character –
it’s something completely different. Here, spiritual life is real, concrete, tangible – totally real. For the
Chinese it all happens at the top of the head.
They’re not going to come here, are they?
    I hope not!
They are people with no feelings. I don’t know if they’ve picked up a psychic being since they’ve
been on earth (there are all kinds of mixtures, you see; there’s no such thing as a pure race any more),
but they are still ice-cold. Difficult.
They could come into contact with Sri Aurobindo’s thought – but not their troops! I don’t know
whether the new Chinese are much interested in philosophy…. It’s better they don’t come!”

    As for aliens:

“Have the beings of the other worlds and planets a psychic
    being?

No, it is a purely terrestrial phenomenon. Only, there is nothing
against the idea that psychic beings may go to the other worlds
if it so pleases them. There is no reason to think that one cannot,
    if one went to another planet, meet psychic beings; it is not impossible;
but these would be psychic beings formed upon earth
who have become free in their movement, going here and there
at will for some reason or other. All knowledge in all traditions,
from every part of the earth, says that the psychic formation
is a terrestrial formation and that the growth of the psychic
being is something that takes place upon earth. But once they
are formed and free in their movement, they can go anywhere in
the universe, they are not limited in their movement; but their
formation and growth belong to the terrestrial life, for reasons
    of concentration.”

Actually, I have not read either of these quotations before – I was referring to the recent postings at the “On Suicide…” blog, the topic of people not having a psychic was raised there. Yes, both these quotes are new insights for me. I had never heard any of this before. Thanks Mike.

What does SA mean when he say that psychic being is absent in certain beings like vital beings, vampires etc ? Does it mean that the psychic being is not “developed” in them but the essential psychic entity or tge spark soul is present ? Or does it mean that they donot have any psychic entity in them at all ?
In case such beings are compeletly devoid of the psychic then what is their essential nature? Is it the vital purush in them ? If so aren’t they more or less automatons driven by the determinisms of the vital plane ?

” Does it mean that the psychic being is not “developed” in them but the essential psychic entity or the spark soul is present ? Or does it mean that they donot have any psychic entity in them at all ?”

Hi arpanrox, as far as l understand, M says these beings aren’t ‘human’, so it would follow, l think, that they definitely don’t have a psychic being – just as Angels, Gods, asuras, demons etc. don’t have one. Also, it would seem that they don’t even have a psychic presence (the psychic being is developed out of the psychic presence, l believe). Also, the Divine Spark is not the Psychic Being according to M.
ln addition to these, there are many thought-forms or elementals created by people.

M explains it below. You’ve probably read this before, but She makes it clear.

” There are some human beings who are like vampires.
What are they and why are they like that?

They are not human; there is only a human form or appearance.
They are incarnations of beings from the world that is just next
to the physical, beings who live on the plane which we call the
vital world. It is a world of all the desires and impulses and
passions and of movements of violence and greed and cunning
and every kind of ignorance; but all the dynamisms too are
there, all the life-energies and all the powers. The beings of
this world have by their nature a strange grip over the material
world and can exercise upon it a sinister influence. Some of them
are formed out of the remains of the human being that persist
after death in the vital atmosphere near to the earth-plane. His
desires and hungers still float there and remain in form even
after the dissolution of the body; often they are moved to go
on manifesting and satisfying themselves and the birth of these
creatures of the vital world is the consequence. But these are
minor beings and, if they can be very troublesome, it is yet
not impossible to deal with them. There are others, far more
dangerous, who have never been in human form; never were
they born into a human body upon earth, for most often they
refuse to accept this way of birth because it is slavery to matter
and they prefer to remain in their own world, powerful and
mischievous, and to control earthly beings from there. For, if
they do not want to be born on earth, they do want to be in
contact with the physical nature, but without being bound by it.
    Their method is to try first to cast their influence upon a man;
then they enter slowly into his atmosphere and in the end may get
complete possession of him, driving out entirely the real human
soul and personality. These creatures, when in possession of an earthly body, may have the human appearance but they have
not a human nature. Their habit is to draw upon the life-force
of human beings; they attack and capture vital power wherever
they can and feed upon it. If they come into your atmosphere,
you suddenly feel depressed and exhausted; if you are near them
for some time you fall sick; if you live with one of them, it may
    kill you.”

“But how is one to get such creatures out of one’s environment
    when they are once there?
The vital power incarnated in these beings is of a very material
kind and it is effective only within a short distance. Ordinarily,
if you do not live in the same house or if you are not in the same
company with them, you do not come within their influence.
But if you open some channel of connection or communication,
through letters, for example, then you make possible an interchange
of forces and are liable to be influenced by them even
from a far distance. The wisest way with these beings is to cut
off all connection and have nothing to do with them—unless
indeed you have great occult knowledge and power and have
learned how to cover and protect yourself—but even then it is
always a dangerous thing to move about with them. To hope to
transform them, as some people do, is a vain illusion; for they do
not want to be transformed. They have no intention of allowing
any transformation and all effort in that direction is useless.
These beings, when in the human body, are not often conscious
of what they really are. Sometimes they have a vague
feeling that they are not quite human in the ordinary way. But
    still there are cases where they are conscious and very conscious;
not only do they know that they do not belong to humanity but
they know what they are, act in that knowledge and deliberately
pursue their ends. The beings of the vital world are powerful by
their very nature; when to their power they add knowledge,
they become doubly dangerous. There is nothing to be done with these creatures; you should avoid having any dealings with
them unless you have the power to crush and destroy them. If
you are forced into contact with them, beware of the spell they
can cast. These vital beings, when they manifest on the physical
plane, have always a great hypnotic power; for the centre of their
consciousness is in the vital world and not in the material and
they are not veiled and dwarfed by the material consciousness
    as human beings are.”

“In case such beings are compeletly devoid of the psychic then what is their essential nature? Is it the vital purush in them ? If so aren’t they more or less automatons driven by the determinisms of the vital plane ?”

Things like thought-forms, which exist all around us and constantly influence ppl, would act like automatons, l believe..and would be driven by the vital impulses of humanity at large..

l’d say your right. All their actions are determined by vital forces or impulses. Each plane has it’s own determinisms. Of course, the more powerful asuras (the masters of these lesser vital beings) belong to the mental planes, l believe, and, as SA says, are behind world movements, like theosophy. Someof these have actually been ‘transformed’ according to M (Her own occult mentor Max Theon was one), but these lesser vital beings seem to have no inclination for it. M says that the the time is coming when these beings will disappear and also a large portion of humanity that follows them.

    “I must tell you that the origin of these beings is prior to that of the gods;
they are the first emanations, the first individual beings of the
universe; so they cannot be got rid of so easily, by winning one war.
As long as they are necessary for the universal evolution they
will exist. The day they lose their utility, they will be converted
    or will disappear.
Besides, they know that they are nearing their last hour and
that is why they are doing as much damage as they can.”

Hey Mike, thanks for the elaborate response :-). (Btw u may call me Arpan)
What I understand by the Spark soul is the essential psychic presence that eventually develops a psychic being/personality for itself. In my question I did not specifically mean vital beings/vampires only, i meant them as examples for the whole pantheon of beings w/o psychic tht u mentioned: devas, asuras, elementals.
What did M mean by “conversion” of such beings ? what is them that could ever attain “liberation”? Does it mean that they would be “bestowed” with a psychic being by Divine Grace ?
Also, I donot clearly grasp what SA means(in letters on yoga) by incarnation of a “fragment of a dead person’s vital” ? What kinda connection would such a dead person’s psychic being have with the newly born person ? Would the new born have his own psychic with no relation of any import with the deceased person except that he has got a part of the dead man’s vital(with associated desires and impulses) in his own vital ?

“What I understand by the Spark soul is the essential psychic presence that eventually develops a psychic being/personality for itself.”

Yes arpan, that would be in line with SA and M:

“With regard to the evolution upwards, it is more correct to
speak of the psychic presence than the psychic being. For it is
the psychic presence which little by little becomes the psychic
being. In each evolving form there is this presence, but it is not
individualised. It is something which is capable of growth and
follows the movement of the evolution. It is not a descent of
the involution from above. It is formed progressively round the
spark of Divine Consciousness which is meant to be the centre
of a growing being which becomes the psychic being when it
is at last individualised. It is this spark that is permanent and
gathers round itself all sorts of elements for the formation of
that individuality; the true psychic being is formed only when
the psychic personality is fully grown, fully built up, round the
eternal divine spark; it attains its culmination, its total fulfilment
if and when it unites with a being or personality from above.
    The Mother”

ln the letter below SA explains the essential differences between Jivatman, Soul (Divine Spark – although, ln other letters He does call the Psychic Being a spark of the Divine), and Psychic Being. You’ll notice that He says that every living thing, from Highest to Lowest has a Divine Spark (l suppose nothing could really exist without that, no matter how deformed it is). So, apparently, even the vital beings must have a spark of divinity somewhere.

“The Jivatman or spirit is self-existent above the manifested
or instrumental being—it is superior to birth and death, always
the same; it is the individual self or Atman, the eternal true being
    of the individual.
The soul is a spark of the Divine in the heart of the living
    creatures of Nature. It is not seated above the manifested being;
it enters into the manifestation of the self, consents to be a
part of its natural phenomenal becoming, supports its evolution
in the world of material Nature. It carries with it at first an
undifferentiated power of the divine consciousness, containing
all possibilities, but at first unevolved possibilities, which have
not yet taken form but to which it is the function of evolution to
give form. This spark of Divinity is there in all terrestrial living
beings from the earth’s highest to its lowest creatures.
The psychic being is a spiritual personality put forward by
the soul in its evolution; its growth marks the stage which the
spiritual evolution of the individual has reached and its immediate
possibilities for the future. It stands behind the mental,
the vital, the physical nature, grows by their experiences, carries
the consciousness from life to life. It is the psychic Person, caitya
purus.a. At first it is veiled by the mental, vital and physical parts,
limited by them in its self-expression by their limitations, bound
to the reactions of Nature, but, as it grows, it becomes capable of
coming forward and dominating the mind, life and body. In the
ordinary man it still depends on them for expression and is not
able to take them up and freely use them. The life of the being
is animal and human, not divine. When the psychic being can
by sadhana become dominant and freely use its instruments,
then the impulse towards the Divine becomes complete and
the transformation of mind, vital and body, not merely their
    liberation, becomes possible.
As the Self or Atman is free and superior to birth and death,
the experience of the Jivatman and its unity with the supreme
or universal Self is sufficient to bring the sense of liberation; but
for the transformation of the life and nature the full awareness
and awakening of our psychic being also is indispensable.
The psychic being realises at this stage its oneness with
the true being, the Self, but it does not disappear or change
into it; it remains as its instrument for psychic and spiritual
self-expression, a divine manifestation in Nature.”

“What did M mean by “conversion” of such beings ? what is them that could ever attain “liberation”? Does it mean that they would be “bestowed” with a psychic being by Divine Grace ?”

By ‘Conversion’ l believe She means that they would have to be born here and go through the terrestrial evolution like the rest of us. ln doing that they would develop a Psychic Being in the process, l suppose. She clarifies it a bit in the quote below. They will need to turn to the Divine. Again, l can only assume there is the possibility of developing a psychic being (just as She says the chinese can). lt seems that just by being born here affords us that opportunity. The Grace can achieve anything. l imagine. She also indicates that just by coming into ontact with a Spiritual seeker thay have a chance for ‘liberation’.

“Is it not a fact that these creatures are drawn by some
peculiar fascination towards the spiritual life?
Yes, because they feel they do not belong to this earth but come
from somewhere else; and they feel too that they have powers
they have half lost and they are eager to win them back. So
whenever they meet anyone who can give them some knowledge
of the invisible world, they rush to him. But they mistake the
vital for the spiritual world and in their seeking follow vital and
not spiritual ends. Or perhaps they deliberately seek to corrupt
spirituality and build up an imitation of it in the mould of their
own nature. Even then it is a kind of homage they pay, or a
sort of amends they make, in their own way, to the spiritual
    life. And there is too some kind of attraction that compels them;
they have revolted against the Divine rule, but in spite of their
revolt or perhaps because of it, they feel somehow bound and
are powerfully attracted by its presence.
This is how it happens that you see them sometimes used
as instruments to bring into connection with each other those
who are to realise the spiritual life upon earth. They do not
purposely serve this use, but are compelled to it. It is a kind of
compensation that they pay. For they feel the pressure of the
descending Light, they sense that the time has come or is soon
coming when they must choose between conversion or dissolution,
choose either to surrender to the Divine Will and take their
part in the Great Plan or to sink into unconsciousness and cease. The contact with a seeker of Truth gives such a being his chance to change. All depends upon how he utilises his chance.
Taken rightly, it may open his way to liberation from falsehood
and obscurity and misery, which is the stuff out of which these
vital creatures are made, and bring him to Regeneration and to
    Life.”

“Also, I do not clearly grasp what SA means(in letters on yoga) by incarnation of a “fragment of a dead person’s vital” ? What kinda connection would such a dead person’s psychic being have with the newly born person ? Would the new born have his own psychic with no relation of any import with the deceased person except that he has got a part of the dead man’s vital(with associated desires and impulses) in his own vital ?”

By the above, l suppose you mean the letters below: The vital/astral fragments, as far as l know, are what is commonly called thought-forms by occultists. l think your right in saying that the new-born has it’s own Psychic. These remnants from dead ppl just attach themselves to compatible victims or hosts. Also, l believe we bring over a lot of these past-life attachments (thought-forms) ourselves. There are even people we’ve known from past lives (sometimes called blind-guides), who can follow us through many incarnations. There is a lot of this written about today, called Spirit-Release therapy. But, no, l don’t think the dead persons psychic being has any direct involvement in the actions of these fragments – their just shells left behind from his lower nature. But, l’m obviously no expert..

“Fragments of a Dead Person that Reincarnate.

All human incarnations or births have naturally a psychic being.
It is only other types like the vital beings that have not, and
that is precisely the reason why they want to possess men and
enjoy physical life without being themselves born here, for so
they escape the psychic law of evolution and spiritual progress
and change. But these formations [the vital fragments of a dead
person] are different, they are things that do not leave the earth
and do not possess but simply attach themselves to some human
rebirth (of course with a psychic in it) which has some affinity
and therefore does not object to or resist their inclusion.
    *
The fragments [of a dead person] are not of the inner being
(who goes on his way to the psychic world) but of his vital
sheath which falls away after death. These can join for birth the
vital of some other Jiva who is being born or they can be used
by a vital being to enter a body in process of birth and partly
possess it for the satisfaction of its propensities. The junction
can also take place after birth.”.

Hi arpan, when SA said in the quote above ‘This spark of Divinity is there in all terrestrial living beings from the earth’s highest to its lowest creatures’, l think He was referring the ‘Psychic Presence’, not the psychic being per se – we discussed the essential difference earlier. lt might have got mixed up with another paragraph.

Beings belonging to the higher vital r spiritually evolved if i am not mistaken? biggest imposters in the world? that’s how religions r created? why would they pretend to be the Supreme God of many a religion? I mean, we know that Christianity was created by Christ … so does that mean …??

What you see today in christianity [churchianity and all it’s different sects] is not what Christ originally taught – it’s an exoteric corruption. Even Buddhism, Hinduism etc.. is like that.
Most major [and minor] religions have been hijacked by these astral/vital beings. Do you really think the catholic church is imitating Christ? l think that’s what the Mother means.

Sri Aurobindo is referred to as an Avatar. By Avatar we mean Avatar of Vishnu. Now Vishnu is an overmental God. An avatar is then not from the sachidananda plane. But the Gita seems to suggest it is.

Is there any wrong in asking such a question. Should one try to understand the relation between the manifest and the unmanifest? In the Life Divine, Sri Aurobindo talks of the three purushas. The universal purusha is not stated by him explicitly to be transcendent. It is a poise where creation is ready to manifest. In this poise the atman and jivataman have both made their appearance I guess. Chapter 15, verses 16, 17, and 18 are of import in this connection.

    16. There are two Purushas (spiritual beings) in this world, the immutable (and impersonal) and the mutable (and personal); the mutable is all these existences, the Kutastha (the high-seated consciousness of the Brahmic status) is called the immutable.
    17. But other than these two is that highest spirit called the supreme Self, who enters the three worlds and upbears them, the imperishable Lord.
    18. Since I am beyond the mutable and am greater and higher even than the immutable, in the world and the Veda I am proclaimed as the Purushottama (the supreme Self).

Sri Krishna is here saying; I am transcendent. What are the three worlds being referred to? They can’t be Life, Mind and Body. They are together one world; the conscient.

The two purushas are said to be in this world. Is the reference to Antaratma and the psychic?

Nothing wrong in asking the question. Its just that I am inclined towards experiential understanding rather than metaphysical or intellectual gymnastics on this topic. I cannot conclude with certainty what kind of Avatar Sri Aurobindo was, and I don’t see any reason to waste my energy in resolving it.

If there are other blog readers/commenters who think they can contribute to this question, they are free to do so.

Obviously there cannot be experiential understanding of the Avatar for ordinary humans, for that would involve identity with Him. But then, have you experienced the psychic. I do not mean Atman; for that would be experience of nirvana, but experience of the evolving soul. The Antaratma I gather is fixed, but then what is its role? Gathering experience?

I quote from one of your posts:
    Rig Veda, 1.164.20

dvā suparņā sayujā sakhāyā samānam vŗkşham parişhasvajāte,

tayor anyaĥ pippalam svādvatty anashnan anyo abhi chākashīti.

Translation: Two birds beautiful of wing, friends and comrades, cling to a common tree, and one eats the sweet fruit, the other regards him and eats not.

In each individual there is the Divine Self which presides over that manifestation but keeps itself above it, not involved in the movement. There is a projection of this Self in the movement of evolution, a soul that is associated with nature and grows by the experience of this interaction. Both the Self and the soul are on the same tree of Nature; but the Self sits above, overseeing but not participating in the experience of the soul involved in it.

If so, how would they develop a psychic being if they choose to be born as humans and evolve ?( SA says they can grow a psychic if they choose to accept the burden of evolution). I thought that psychoc being is the evolving divine element within us that binds all other sheaths of our being. If Divine is everywhere, where is it in typal beings ?

“The Supramental transformation is relative to the Earth. Doesn’t affect the Universe AFAIK.”
I am not sure I quite get it. As in, the field of evolution in the material Universe is Earth only as far as I have understood SA. So, if life on Earth gets Supramentalised, will the evolution on Earth finally “end” ?
I guess you meant to say that cycles of Creation and Dissolution of the Universe won’t end. If so, yeah that’s my idea too.

Probably it means that they particularly don’t belong to the physical plane.
According to Sri Aurobindo, all beings of other planes are typal and only on Earth (all planes of the Universe are projected here) exists a possibility to evolve from lower to a higher plane, so even Gods have to incarnate on Earth if they want to progress to something higher.

Sri Aurobindo and The Mother have said that this [Prahlaya’s] won’t happen any more because of the Supramental descent.

Here’s what they say [sorry if it’s a bit long]:
    “Pralaya
Explaining unfolding of the Divine in a progressive creation, the Mother and Sri Aurobindo wrote:

In fact in the history of our universe there have been six consecutive periods which began by a creation, were prolonged by a force of preservation and ended by a disintegration, a destruction, a return to the Origin, which is called Pralaya; and that is why this tradition is there. But it has been said that the seventh creation would be a progressive creation, that is, after the starting-point of the creation, instead of its being simply followed by a preservation, it would be followed by a progressive manifestation which would express the Divine more and more completely, so that no disintegration and return to the Origin would be necessary. And it has been announced that the period we are in is precisely the seventh, that is, it would not end by a Pralaya, a return to the Origin, a destruction, a disappearance, but that it would be replaced by a constant progress, because it would be a more and more perfect unfolding of the divine Origin in its creation.

And this is what Sri Aurobindo says. He speaks of a constant unfolding, that is, the Divine manifests more and more completely; more and more perfectly, in a progressive creation. It is the nature of this progression which makes the return to the Origin, the destruction no longer necessary. All that does not progress disappears, and that is why physical bodies die, it’s because they are not progressive; they are progressive up to a certain moment, then there they stop and most often they remain stable for a certain time, and then they begin to decline, and then disappear. It’s because the physical body, physical matter as it is at present is not plastic enough to be able to progress constantly. But it is not impossible to make it sufficiently plastic for the perfecting of the physical body to be such that it no longer needs disintegration, that is, death.

Only, this cannot be realised except by the descent of the Supermind which is a force higher than all those which have so far manifested and which will give the body a plasticity that will allow it to progress constantly, that is, to follow the divine movement in its unfolding”

Yes, apparently all those beings who belong to the non-human line of evolution [nature spirits like fairies etc [there was one woman in the ashram who was previously a fairy], and angels, gods, vital beings], have to incarnate here to develop a Psychic Being – the Divine Light is in all, l believe, but not the individualized Psychic spark].

As far as I read, SA said that insread of this strife filled evolution a gradual painless unfoldment like that of a flower could have been possible.

Also, the point about there being 6 creations is new to me. I thought there have been innumerable and it’s just that in this Kalpas there are 10 prati kalpas in which man has to evolve through 10 stages:
“For each of the ten PratiKalpas has its type. Man in the ten Prati-Kalpas progresses through the ten types which have been fixed for his evolution in the Kalpa. In this Kalpa the types, dashagu, are the ten forms of consciousness, called the Pashu, Vanara, Pishacha, Pramatha, Rakshasa, Asura, Deva, Sadhyadeva, Siddhadeva and the Satyadeva.” (Record of Yoga, page 1326, March 1914)

So there would be “unfoldment” beyond the Supramental ? Is this process infinite ?

Also, can you give the source of your text ?

“Yes, apparently all those beings who belong to the non-human line of evolution [nature spirits like fairies etc [there was one woman in the ashram who was previously a fairy], and angels, gods, vital beings], have to incarnate here to develop a Psychic Being – the Divine Light is in all, l believe, but not the individualized Psychic spark].”
Umm, isn’t Psychic Spark the precursor to Psychic Being ? As in, the Spark is the seed possibility from which the Psychic Personality/being develops ?

Yes, that’s what l’m saying – or rather what the Mother and Sri Aurobindo are saying. But a human incarnation is needed for the birth of that ‘spark’ to take place.

    The quote is from:

There is an ‘Ananda Plane’ beyond the Supramental, l believe, but Sri Aurobindo says in his ‘Letters on Yoga’ that after Realizing the Highest [Supermind, l think] there is still infinite progress, after that – evolution carries on without end, l think He means.

Wow, what a synchronicity. I was explorimg this particularly site for a week now. Dr. Alok Pandey’s presentations gladden the heart.

Oh yeah, that’s t he inkling I had from the finalbchapters in the Synthesis of Yoga regarding the Gnostic Being. Gnosis here meaning the Chit plane out of Sat, Chit and Ananda.

“Yes, that’s what l’m saying – or rather what the Mother and Sri Aurobindo are saying. But a human incarnation is needed for the birth of that ‘spark’ to take place.”

Allow me to trouble you a bit more here. What I meant by Spark being the “seed possibility” is that its present in all beings typal or evolutionary, while it starts developing into a psychic being only in a Human Incarnation. While you here stated that even that seed possibility(spark) is there only in Humans. Then in what form is Divine principle in other beings ?

Arpanrox, SA also says in the ‘Letters’ that humanity isn’t ready for the Ananda Plane beyond the Supramental. – just thought l’d mention that..

@ Mike: This link seems satisfactory for these questions:

        http://savitri.in/blogs/light-of-supreme/the-hundred-levels-that-raise-man-from-his-animality-to-god

Besides explaining the timescales: Yugas, chaturyugas, manvabtaras, prati kalpas and kalpas, reiterates the 10 forms of consciousness to be perfected in THIS kalpa, mentioned in Record of Yoga:
Pashu, Vanara, Pishacha, Pramatha, Rakshasa, Asura, Deva, Sadhyadeva, Siddhadeva and the Satyadeva.

A Kalpa is constituted of 1000 chaturyugas(1 chaturyuga= cycle of 4 yugas at the end of which an apocalypse occurs on the Bhumi/planet which Life is being perfected in the relevant pratikalpa ) , or 10 Pratikalpas(of 100 chaturyugas each). At the end of a Kalpa Entire Universe dissolves. Each pratikalpa is divided into 14 Manvantaras with each manvantar having slightly varying number of chaturyugas. In this Pratikalpa, the Bhumi is Earth. In the last Pratikalpa it was Mars.
In each pratikalpa 1 of the above forms of consciousness is perfected. We are in the 6th pratikalpa of the Asuras. (There are other details, you will find in the article).
It also explains how Mother’s assertion of there having been 6 pralayas fits in the context of present kalpa.

Now what I think is: Supramental Being is “Deva” in the above scheme. While Sadhyadeva is the Bliss-Being and so on.
And all this play is relevant only in This Kalpa. Next Kalpa would start with another play.

“Then in what form is Divine principle in other beings ?”

From what l gather, the ‘Spark’ would not be in all beings [that would be the Divine Presence, which is not the same thing] – the ‘Spark’ represents the evolutionary being in us.
The Divine Presence/Principle inhabits all creation, but the typal beings are non-evolutionary and the Psychic Being is evolutionary [as far as l understand].

Terrific effort, Sandeep. curious to know the reason for your choosing the circle-dot symbol for the super-mind.can you share? thanks.

The symbol of dot-within-circle is the Sun Symbol, which of course, is synonymous with the Supramental Principle ( and related others) . So, a most appropriate coincidence…

    Very good reply,
As a multi dimensional thing can be presented in many ways!
The more important is Sandeep’s way to bring it in interesting and easy way!

In my countless discussions with Christians I some times hear them say that “trying to empty the mind” is dangerous because some of these beings from other planes (demons) can attack us. I didn’t buy it but perhaps we are always vulnerable to the influence of such beings. Their strategy is asking other beings (angels) and of course, Christ. to protect. It seems to me that the mind is not emptied but clarified and we are thus more alert and less vulnerable. And yet when most of us go to sleep we completely let go and just drift, so vulnerable then also. It doesn’t seem so though. I have never had any problems. I love the study of cosmology though.

Purely emptying the mind does not cause any danger; first you experience some coolness around the forehead, then some heat in the Ajna Chakra, then some clarity of thought because the mind’s frequency is raised. No danger so far, contrary to the dire predictions of your Christian friends.

The danger starts when your astral body starts traveling out of your physical body and goes into vital domains unprotected (what Sri Aurobindo and the Mother called “exteriorisation”). That’s when you can can encounter malevolent beings who seek to expand their domain of influence by exploiting your weaknesses. If this happens to you, you will know it.

Going to sleep does not cause any vulnerability because most people, when they sleep, spend most of the time in the subconscious. They are unconscious mostly, although sometimes they awaken with a fright if they have a nightmare when their astral body came into contact with some malevolent being. Sleep refreshes you because for a brief amount of time, your consciousness ascends to Satchidananda (higher three levels of consciousness).

I will, of course read the link you gave. I just finished the chapter on Triple Transformation in Life Divine. Slowly making my way through the book. Only 3 more chapters. Earlier in the book, great chapters on “evil” back in the chapters on ignorance back in Book 2 part 2. Best explanation I have heard on it yet on theodicy.

But back to sleep. I usually wake up as if from a bog, depressed and a bit of dread. Face wash and coffee and I am good to go. But it is as if I am going through some murky zone to wake up. I’d love to wake up refreshed.

      2. Sandeep Post author

Your sleep is mostly in the subconscious then. If you look around you, you will see most people watch TV and eat adequate food or consume liquor before going to sleep. Only when their mind is tired and body is unconscious, they are able to fall asleep. When they wake up, they need stimulants like coffee before they begin their day.

If you start meditating regularly, sleep quality does improve. One begins to sleeps early, with a lighter stomach, wakes up early before dawn, does not need stimulants to get started. This is how hermits live brimming with energy. One also starts to become conscious during sleep and can navigate the various worlds.

You should get this book “Yoga of sleep and dreams“. If you are in the USA, there are local centers which might have them.

        and these links might help

A contemplation exercise before going to sleep

Towards more conscious sleep and dreams

Thanks for all that. I used to have “Yoga of Sleep” and loaned it away. I am more committed now to meditation simply for quality of life. I have also been to SwamiJ site before. Another great resource. I appreciate discussing the meditation process with others who know what I am talking about. I am at the place of inner silence observing the images the arise at the edge of sleep. i become alert again just enough that the image fades. A very luminal place. I think SwamiJ referred to it as Unmani. It would seem I have quite a ways to go. Bout I also realized that many do not consciously make it this far. How fortunate we are to be on such a path.

Something I’ve noticed many times. Why is it if I sleep just two hours in the afternoon I wake up refreshed, whereas even if I sleep many hours during the night I still wake up tired in the morning?

“The Supermind is the Creator of the phenomenal universe, of the lower worlds of Mind, Life and Matter. It is the medium for self-manifestation of the Supreme or Absolute.”

I had imagined that was the function of the para prakriti. The comprehending consciousness as the first poise of para prakriti and the apprehending consciousness being apara prakriti. The projecting consciousness being the full development of apara prakriti.

The supermind is not a person. It is a power. Of what person? Prakriti is not a person either.
Sri Aurobindo talks of ‘the three persons’.

Why did Sri Aurobindo invent new terminology? I am trying to correlate:

    Annamaya Kosha Physical 1st Chakra
Pranamaya Kosha Vital 2nd, 3rd and 4th chakras
    Manomaya Kosha Mental 5th chakra
Vignanamaya Kosha Supermind 6th chakra (Psychic Being? Buddhi?)
Anandamaya Kosha The Gnostic 7th & 8th Chakras (Central being?)

Help me out. I am pretty sure it is messed up.

So interesting Sandeep Bhai, now I have some questions-

    1) To which plane/level did Krishna, Rama and other Avatars belong? (Overmind? Higher Vital?)
    2) To which plane did Buddha and Adi Sankracharya belong?
    3) The being that was guiding Hitler..was he an asura or rakshasha or pisacha?
    4) What about Hitler and Stalin themselves? Did they belong to any particular plane?
    5) Did Sri Aurobindo or Mother ever tell anything about the Trinity of Puranas? Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva?

    Hi Sandeep Ji,
Many Christians believe in an invisible benevolent entity which they refer to as “Spiritual Guide” or “Gaurdian Angels”.
One or more such entities are supposed to accompany a human being throughout the life of that person. These entities are watch over the person they are accompanying and sometimes help them too, by steering their life in the right direction so that their ward may achieve their life purpose. Help is given in the form of putting the right thoughts in the ward’s mind. But some say help is given only when they are called to do so
Mostly, these entities are looking after only one human being though there maybe instances where a Guide is assigned two humans.
Now-a-days, there are many websites offering guided meditation help to contact the Guide. This kind of contact is expected to improve rapport and communication between the person and her/his Guide.

So, who are these entities in Hindu cosmology ?
    Regards,
    Geetha
